Brazil canceled 2013 state visit to US over illegal NSA surveillance of Brazil president, key advisors, and state-run energy giant Petrobras, "a serious affront to Brazil's national sovereignty." $4 billion Boeing contract put on hold. Of pending $4 billion contract with Boeing: "Brazil cannot buy such strategic aircraft from a country it cannot trust."

"Hackers have hit back in retaliation for US cyber-spying on Brazil but reportedly mistook the US space agency Nasa for the National Security Agency (NSA)."

"Some activists decided to protest this US practice but it seems that they picked the wrong target," a specialized blog of the Brazilian news portal Uol said.

A Nasa spokesman confirmed that a Brazilian hacker group last week posted a political message on a number of Nasa websites.

"At no point were any of the agency's primary websites, missions or classified systems compromised," said Nasa spokesman Allard Beutel.

"We are diligently taking action to investigate and reconstitute the websites impacted during web defacement incident," he said.

The attack followed recent disclosures that the NSA spied on Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff's email communications and on the state-run energy giant Petrobras

The disclosures were based on documents obtained by former US intelligence contractor Edward Snowden.

Brasilia slammed the alleged spying as "unacceptable" and demanded explanations from Washington.

Of pending $4 billion contract with Boeing: "Brazil cannot buy such strategic aircraft from a country it cannot trust."

Sept. 17, 2013, "Brazil's president cancels US state visit over spying revelations," Reuters via UK Telegraph

"Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff has called off plans for a state visit to Washington in October because of revelations that the United States spied on her personal communications
and those of other Brazilians."

""Illegal surveillance practices intercepting the communication and data of citizens, companies and members of the Brazilian government constitute a serious affront to national sovereignty and individual rights, and are incompatible with democratic cooperation between friendly nations," the Brazilian government said in a statement.

In the absence of explanations and a "commitment to cease such surveillance activities, the conditions are not in place for the visit to go ahead as previously scheduled," it said.

US officials said the NSA surveillance was aimed at tracking suspected terrorist activity and did not pry into personal communications, but Rousseff was not convinced.

The trip was expected to be a platform for deals on oil exploration and biofuels technology, and Brazil's potential purchase of fighter jets from Chicago-based Boeing Co.

A defense contract worth more than $4 billion that Boeing is seeking for the sale of 36 F-18 fighter jets to the Brazilian Air Force could be the main victim of the spying affair. Brazilian officials have said Brazil cannot buy such strategic aircraft from a country it cannot trust.

The spying revelations sparked a political uproar in Brazil that Ms Rousseff could not ignore. A senior government official said that Ms Rousseff's top advisers, including her mentor and predecessor as president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, encouraged her to scrap the state visit."
