"Donald Trump and Ted Cruz’s presidential campaigns collided in Wichita on Saturday when both candidates spoke at the Sedgwick County Republican caucus.

The event at Century II in downtown Wichita drew thousands of people, some of them lining up as early as 6 a.m. to attend a Trump rally before the caucus....

Lining up early

Plenty of people did want to hear from Trump, and some lined up outside Century II at 6 a.m. to get into the candidate’s 9 a.m. rally.

Many said this was the first time they had attended the caucus.

“This could be a historic time,” said Bill Haynes, a 65-year-old Wichitan and first-time caucus attendee, as music from The Rolling Stones blasted on the loudspeakers.

Haynes and his wife, Karen, 61, said one of the main reasons Trump appeals to them is that he is not a lifelong politician.

Politicians have got everything screwed up, so I think we ought to get a businessman in and see what he can do,” said Bill, who works in construction.

Karen, an administrative assistant, said she was a registered Democrat, but she’s “coming over to Donald.”

“I’m extremely tired of the current administration and I don’t see good choices in the Democratic Party,” she said.

Ryan Stafford, a 21-year-old sophomore at Wichita State University, said he “switched just in time” from being a registered Libertarian to a Republican so that he could participate in the caucus.

Being on a college campus, I see a lot of the political correctness and crashing down on free speech that happens,” said Stafford, who studies anthropology. “Some of my family members don’t like that Trump is so kind of unfiltered, but that’s what makes him so popular to me. He says what he thinks. And I respect that.”

3/5/15, Blaycock
Cornelius Blaycock, 43, a self-described blue collar guy from Wichita, said that he believes that Trump will bring jobs back to this country by fixing trade agreements with Mexico and China “that are causing our jobs to go overseas.”

I just believe he stands for America and our values and what we need,” Blaycock said. “And I just think people need to get behind this man.”

Retired bed and breakfast owner Suzanne Kerr expressed some hesitations about Trump's rhetoric. "I wish he weren't so brash and uncontrollable," she said. "That's what worries me."

"(Ohio Gov. John) Kasich rises above that," she added.  "Unfortunately, he's not made the momentum."

But she and her husband, Gerald, said they still wanted to see the Republican frontrunner in person.

"I have a feeling he's going to be the nominee so I should learn more about him," Suzanne said."...
